The Mobile World Documentary

The origins of global mobile communications today can be traced back to a single agreement signed on September 7th 1987 by Europe's biggest telecommunications operators. It was the catalyst of international cooperation on an unprecedented scale.
Introducing Mobile Planet
09/02/2008
In 1987, 15 telecoms operators came together in Copenhagen, and signed a document that paved the way for global mobile. This Memorandum of Understanding led to a common mobile standard – it gave us international roaming; lower cost handsets and tariffs – but more than that, it changed forever the way we communicate. And the extent to which mobile has affected our lives – no matter where we live, and what our social and economic background – is incredible. Mobile has spread through all aspects of life.
Which is why the GSM Association has partnered with TelecomTV to document this phenomenal achievement through a dedicated website. The site will feature video content from around the world, updated every week.
The project started with the production of a feature-length documentary film, "Mobile Planet", which will be broadcast in numerous countries towards the end of 2008. A version will be available to buy in August, as part of a 200-page photographic book, through the Amazon online store. It will also be available to download and rent. Details will be posted here soon.
The website will host extended versions of the many sequences and interviews filmed for the documentary – over eight hours in total. In addition, we will be filming new material throughout the year, as well as calling on viewers to submit their own footage.
Not only that, but the complete video programming for the Mobile World Congress events in Macau and Barcelona, together with archive material from previous events, will be available here to watch – all free of charge.
